Corfu has two fortresses, which confuses people constantly. This is the older one, on the point; the New Fortress rises above the harbour on the other side of the old town. Both are Venetian work, and both are open.
What is inside
The site is large and mostly open ground rather than rooms:
- The two peaks that give the rock its shape, with fortifications stepping up them.
- The climb to the lighthouse on the higher peak, which is the reason to come: the view takes in the old town, the harbour, the mountains of the mainland and, on a clear day, the coast of Albania.
- The British-era church of St George, a Doric temple in appearance, built during the years Britain governed the island.
- Barracks and casemates in varying states, some used for exhibitions and events.
What the visit involves
It is a walk rather than a museum: uneven ground, ramps and steps, and a steady climb to the top. Allow an hour to ninety minutes, more if you sit at the top, which most people do.
There is little shade on the rock. Early morning and late afternoon are the times to go, and the light on the town from up there is best late.
How it fits with the rest of the town
The fortress, the old town lanes, the Liston arcade and the Spianada square are one continuous walk. The standard morning: the kantounia lanes first while they are shaded, the fortress before the heat, and the Spianada for coffee afterwards.
Concerts and events are held inside the walls through the summer, which is worth checking locally if you are in town in the evening.
