The result looks nothing like the rest of Greece, which is exactly the appeal and also the problem: everybody knows.
What it is actually like
A curved bay of pale sand, unusually clear water, and the grove rising immediately behind the beach. The beach itself is organised, with loungers, a car park and seasonal facilities, so this is not a wild cove despite the setting.
The palms are protected. You look at the forest from marked paths rather than walking freely through it, and camping under them, which used to happen, is not allowed. That protection is why the grove still exists, so treat the ropes as the point rather than an inconvenience.
The distance is the deciding factor
Vai sits beyond Sitia at the island’s eastern tip. From Heraklion that is a long drive; from Chania or Rethymno it is most of a day each way, which makes it impractical unless you are staying in the east.
The honest advice: plan Vai as a day from an eastern base, not as an excursion from the west. If you are based in Chania and want a striking beach, the west has Balos, Elafonisi and Falassarna, and you will spend the day at the beach rather than in the car. Making the most of it
- Arrive early. Coaches and rental cars fill the car park through the morning, and the bay is small enough to feel it.
- Combine it with the east, which is the real argument for the trip: the palm bay, the coves nearby, and the archaeological site at Zakros further south make a proper day.
- Shade is rented, not found. The grove is fenced off, so shade on the sand means an umbrella.
- Facilities are seasonal and thin out of season, when the drive is quieter and the beach is at its best.
