The river at the bottom runs dry for much of the year and appears again at the springs of Voidomatis, which is the coldest water most visitors will ever swim in.
Two ways to experience it, and they are not the same day
The viewpoints. Oxya and Beloi, above the villages of Monodendri and Vradeto, both look straight down into it. Short walks from parking.
The through-walk. Monodendri to Vikos village, roughly six hours across rough ground with a serious descent and ascent.

The through-walk is a mountain route
It is a mountain route, not a stroll, and people are helicoptered out of it every season.
We describe the ground rather than certify it: this is remote terrain with no phone signal in the bottom of the canyon. That single fact changes what a twisted ankle means down there.
Nothing on this page tells you the walk is within your ability, and our editorial policy is explicit that we do not certify safety. If you are going to do it, plan it as a mountain day and take advice locally rather than from a travel page.
What Zagori is around it
Forty-six stone villages in the mountains of Epirus, linked by slate paths and arched packhorse bridges. It looks nothing like the rest of Greece and it is the best walking country in the country.
Papingo and Mikro Papingo, under the Astraka towers, are the best known and the busiest. Monodendri, Vitsa and Dilofo are the others most walkers pass through.
Practical notes
The viewpoints are the accessible version. Short walks from parking, and they give you the scale that a photograph flattens.
Ioannina is the gateway. It is the natural base for Zagori and the gorge, with an airport and domestic flights, and the Egnatia motorway putting it about four and a half hours from Thessaloniki. Our Ioannina guide covers it.

Common questions
Is Vikos really the deepest gorge in the world? It is cited as one of the deepest by the ratio of its depth to its width, which is a specific claim and not the same as “deepest”. We carry it as our own guide does, with the ratio attached.
Can I swim in the river? The Voidomatis springs are where the water reappears, and they are icy. That is a description, not a recommendation.
Can I see it without walking far? Yes - Oxya and Beloi are short walks from parking.
