Why not from Athens
Because the Sporades sit in the northwest Aegean off the coast of central-mainland Greece, opposite Thessaly, and Piraeus faces the wrong water. The group connects east to Skopelos and Alonissos rather than south to the Cyclades.
So a Sporades trip is planned around a mainland port or an airport, not around Piraeus. That single fact catches out more people than any timetable.
The two mainland ports
Volos is the nearest and the quickest crossing. Agios Konstantinos is the port most people reach from Athens by road, and its crossing is longer.
The trade is straightforward: Agios Konstantinos is closer to Athens by land, Volos is closer to Skiathos by sea. If you are driving from Athens and want the shortest time on the water, Agios Konstantinos; if you are coming from the north or want to see Volos and Pelion, Volos.

Cars, and which boat
Conventional ferries take vehicles; the fast services generally do not. On Skiathos itself you do not need a car, because the island bus runs the length of the developed south coast where the town, the port, the airport and the busiest beaches all sit.
So the honest advice is: leave the car on the mainland unless you are continuing to Skopelos, which is bigger, hillier and where a car earns its keep.
Stay the night in Volos
Not a throwaway suggestion. Volos sits at the head of the Pagasetic gulf with Mount Pelion rising behind it, and it has a food custom worth planning around.
A tsipouradiko serves tsipouro, the local spirit, and every order arrives with a plate of food you did not choose. Order a second round and a different plate comes, and the plates escalate. You do not order a meal: you order drinks, repeatedly, and dinner happens to you.
There are dozens of these places along the waterfront. Sailing out the next morning after a night of that is a much better start to a Sporades trip than a dawn drive. The Volos itinerary covers the rest.
Onward within the group
From Skiathos the group opens up: Skiathos to Skopelos is a short hop east, and Alonissos and the national marine park lie beyond it. Sporades island hopping has the sequencing.
Where this leaves you
You cannot sail from Athens, which is the fact to build around. Volos is the shortest mainland crossing and Agios Konstantinos is the one closer to Athens by road. Take a conventional boat if you need the car, leave the car behind if you are only doing Skiathos, and give Volos the night before rather than driving through it.
