Meteora is the best single sight on the Greek mainland, and from Thessaloniki it is close enough to tempt people into doing it in a day. It is about three hours each way.

The ways there
By car, roughly three hours: south on the motorway past Larissa, then west to Kalambaka. It is easy driving, and a car is what lets you take the road that loops between the monasteries rather than parking once.
By train, changing at Palaiofarsalos onto the Kalambaka branch. It is the pleasant way to do it, it arrives in the middle of Kalambaka, and it means no driving. See trains in Greece.
By bus, KTEL via Trikala, with a change. Reliable and slow.
On a tour, which is how a large share of visitors do it, and which solves the transport and the timing at the cost of moving at somebody else’s pace.
Day trip or overnight
The honest answer is overnight. Six hours of travel around a two-hour visit is a poor ratio, and it forces you to see the rocks in the middle of the day, which is the worst light and the busiest hour.
Staying in Kalambaka or Kastraki at the foot of the pillars gets you the two things that make Meteora extraordinary: sunrise, when the mist sits in the valley below the monasteries, and sunset from the viewpoints on the west side. Both are free, both are quiet, and neither is available on a day trip.
What to know before you go
- Six monasteries are open, each on its own rock, and each has its own closing day that rotates. Check the current schedule before you plan an order.
- Dress code is enforced. Shoulders and knees covered; wrap skirts are lent at the gates, but wearing your own is easier.
- There are a lot of steps, cut into the rock. This is a physical visit.
- You cannot see all six well in one day. Three is a good number.
- The footpaths between them are the best way to do it, and almost nobody does.
Combining it
- Ioannina and Zagori are about two hours west, on the far side of the Pindus.
- Metsovo is on that road.
- Delphi is about three hours south, which makes a Thessaloniki-Meteora-Delphi-Athens run a very good four or five days.
