The two ways

Drive or bus to a mainland port, then the boat.

  • Volos, about three and a half to four hours from Athens, and the main Sporades port. Ferries and high-speed craft, and it carries cars.
  • Agios Konstantinos, on the coast road north, closer to Athens at around two and a half hours, with seasonal fast boats.
  • Mantoudi on Evia is the third and least-known option, and often the shortest crossing.

Fly. Athens to Skiathos (JSI) is about forty minutes. The island’s runway is short and sits between the sea and a road, which has made it internationally famous among aviation spotters, and the approach is a genuine spectacle. In summer it takes charters from all over Europe.

Which to choose

Fly if you are going to Skiathos itself and will not need a car, or will hire one there.

Drive and cross if you want your own car, or want to combine the island with the mainland: Volos and the Pelion peninsula behind it are one of the loveliest corners of Greece and almost nobody on a Skiathos flight sees them.

Onward in the Sporades

The same boats continue to Skopelos and Alonissos, and the hops between the three are short, frequent in season and the reason to treat the Sporades as a group rather than a single island.

Alonissos sits inside the National Marine Park, the largest in Europe, and Skopelos is the green one with the cliff-top chapel. See skiathos to skopelos.

Practical notes

  • Skiathos is small and busy. It has the airport and the nightlife of the group, and it is the loudest of the three.
  • The season is short. Sporades ferry and flight schedules thin sharply outside summer, and the islands genuinely quieten in winter.
  • Book the car ferry ahead in August; the Volos boats fill.

Last checked August 2026. Sporades schedules are strongly seasonal - see our editorial policy.
