Monemvasia is a Byzantine town on the seaward side of a vast rock joined to the Peloponnese by a causeway, and it is invisible from the mainland until you walk round.

Getting there
By car, about four hours: the A7 motorway to Tripoli or the coast road through Argos and Sparta, then south-east down the Laconian coast. The last hour is the slow, scenic part.
By KTEL bus, direct from Athens, roughly five to six hours with stops.
Not by train, and not reliably by boat. Seasonal fast-ferry links from Piraeus to Monemvasia have run in some years and not others; treat any sailing as a bonus rather than a plan. See trains in Greece for why the Peloponnese is a road region.
The bit people get wrong
Cars cannot enter the town. You park at the causeway or in the modern village of Gefyra on the mainland side, and walk in through a single gate.
Inside, the streets are stone lanes and steps, there are no vehicles at all, and luggage has to come with you. A wheeled suitcase is the wrong bag. Some hotels arrange transfers at the gate; ask before you arrive.
Above the lower town, a steep path climbs to the upper town, largely ruined, and the twelfth-century church of Agia Sofia on the cliff edge. It is a hot climb and the best part.
Staying inside or outside
Inside the rock is the experience: stone rooms, no traffic, and the town to yourself after the day visitors leave. It is limited and expensive and books far ahead.
Gefyra, across the causeway, is an ordinary seaside village with more rooms and lower prices, and it is a five-minute walk or a short shuttle from the gate.
Where it fits
- Gythio and the Mani are about two hours west.
- Sparta and Mystras are an hour and a half north-west.
- Elafonisos, with the best sand in the Peloponnese, is an hour south and a short ferry.
- Leonidio is on the coast road back north.
