A Lefkada itinerary: five days, no ferry

What waits on the other side is a west coast of white cliffs dropping to turquoise water, a windsurf bay in the south, and a green interior most visitors drive past. Five days does it well. Everything else is in the Lefkada guide.

Before you go: the bridge, and the drive

The bridge floats on the water rather than arching over it, so to let boats through the canal it swings open at set times and road traffic waits until it closes again. The Lefkada port authority publishes the current times, and they are worth a look if you are arriving on a tight connection.

There are three ways in. The nearest airport is Aktion, near Preveza, a short drive over the water from the bridge, and most visitors rent a car there and drive straight on. From Athens, driving is the only direct route and it is a long half-day at the wheel rather than a hop. Without a car, a bus reaches Lefkada Town but not easily around the island.

Day 1: Lefkada Town, and the canal

Arrive and stay in town for the first night. Lefkada Town sits by the canal at the northern end, a working place rather than a resort, with a marina, a long waterfront and a compact centre.

It is not the prettiest town in the Ionian and it is the most convenient base for a first night, especially if you arrived late over the bridge. Walk the waterfront, eat, and get the car sorted for the morning.

Day 2: the west coast, and the famous beaches

The day the island is known for. The west coast is a wall of white limestone with the road running along the top and steep descents down to the water, and the beaches below are the reason people come.

Porto Katsiki is the famous one, a crescent of pale shingle under a sheer white cliff, reached by a long descent. Egremni further north is the other headline, and Kathisma is the long, accessible one that works best if you want a full day rather than a photograph.

Pick two, not three. The drives between them are slower than the map suggests and the descents take time.

Day 3: Vasiliki, and the wind

Move south. Vasiliki sits at the bottom of the island and has one of Europe’s most dependable afternoon winds, which has made it a windsurfing centre for decades.

Even if you never touch a board, the bay is worth a day: the morning is calm and good for swimming, the wind fills in after lunch, and the whole village organises itself around that rhythm. If you do want to sail, this is one of the best places in the Mediterranean to learn.

Day 4: the interior, and the villages

Turn inland, which almost nobody does. Lefkada has a green mountainous middle with old villages on it: Karya, known for its embroidery, and Englouvi high up, known for its lentils, both reached by roads that wind.

It is cooler up here, the views run across to the mainland, and the pace is entirely different from the west-coast beach circuit. A day of this is what turns a beach week into a trip.

Day 5: the small islands by boat

Finish on the water. Off Lefkada’s east coast lies a scatter of small islands, and boats run out from Nydri to them for the day.

Meganisi is the substantial one, with villages and coves and a real population. The trips also run past the smaller privately owned islands and into bays that the road cannot reach, and a day out there is the best way to see this coast.

How to adapt this

Three days. Town, the west-coast beaches, and Vasiliki. That is the essential Lefkada.

With children. Base on the east coast around Nydri, where the water is calm and shallow and the boat trips leave from. The west-coast beaches are spectacular and involve steep descents and open water.

Without a car. Difficult, and a waste of the island’s main advantage. If you have driven this far, keep the car.

Adding Kefalonia. The natural next island, and a short crossing south. Lefkada to Kefalonia covers it, and day trips from Lefkada covers the rest.
