What is actually there
A long sandy beach running either side of a small harbour, with organised sections, watersports and beach bars. The centre is dense with bars, restaurants and shops; the sand thins out to something ordinary and quiet within a fifteen-minute walk in either direction.
The harbour is a working one, with boats to Nisyros, the volcanic island south of Kos, which is the best day trip on this coast.
The nightlife question
Kardamena’s bar strip is compact and loud in season, and it draws a young crowd. If you are booking here, the distance from that strip decides your nights, exactly as at Faliraki on Rhodes.

Nisyros
The volcano trip is the reason to look at the harbour rather than the bars: a crossing to Nisyros, a bus up to the caldera floor, and a walk into a steaming crater. Boats run in season and the day is long. It is covered on our day trips coverage and worth planning around the wind.
Practical notes
- Buses run along the south coast and to Kos Town in season.
- The airport is close, which makes Kardamena convenient on arrival and noisy on approach paths.
- Out of season the strip closes almost entirely.

Away from the strip, the beach works well. Accommodation choice matters more than the beach itself, because the bars decide the nights.
