The water
What makes it worth a page rather than a booking is how the water arrives. At Thermopotamos, on the shore just outside the town, hot mineral water comes out of the rock and runs openly down over the stone into the sea, steaming, staining the rock orange and white with mineral deposit.
You sit in it where it pools, and where the hot stream meets the cold sea you can choose your temperature by moving a metre. It is free, it is open at any hour, and it is the thing people remember.
The water is genuinely hot at source, well above bathing temperature, which is a practical matter rather than a warning: it cools as it descends and people work out where to sit.
The town
Loutra Edipsou was a fashionable resort in the early twentieth century, and the architecture shows it: large old spa hotels, some restored and some faded, along a seafront promenade.
There are formal spa facilities with pools and treatments, used heavily out of season and by an older domestic clientele, and the town has a distinct off-season life because of it.

- The north Evia coast, with beaches at Rovies and Limni, both quiet.
- The forests inland, which suffered badly in recent wildfires and are recovering.
- Osios David and the Byzantine monasteries in the hills.
Getting there and how long
By ferry from Arkitsa on the mainland, about 40 minutes, which is the usual way, or by road down through Evia. Athens is about two and a half hours including the crossing.
