What that changes
Everything, and mostly for the better. The village is a single curve of whitewashed buildings round a bay: rooms, tavernas, a small beach, boats. No traffic, no delivery lorries, no coach park. Supplies come in by boat.
It also means the ferry timetable is your timetable. Miss the last boat and you are staying, which is how a large number of people end up staying longer than they planned.
What you do there
Very little, deliberately. Swim off the beach or the rocks, eat by the water, and use it as the base for the walks that make this coast famous:
- West along the coast path towards Marmara and the Aradena gorge mouth.
- East to Sweetwater beach, reached on foot along the cliff path or by boat.
- Up to Anopoli on the plateau above, a long climb for people who want one.
- The boat to Agia Roumeli, where walkers come out of the Samaria Gorge.
Getting there
Ferries run along the south coast between Chora Sfakion, Loutro, Agia Roumeli and Sougia in season, and the timetable thins sharply outside summer. Chora Sfakion is the usual road head, an hour and a half or so from Chania across the mountains, and there is parking there.
Confirm the day’s sailings before you commit, and note the last boat back if you are visiting rather than staying. Getting around Greece covers the wider system.
Practical notes
- Bring cash. The village is small and card acceptance is uneven.
- Rooms book out in high summer, and there is no walk-up overflow the way there is on the north coast.
- The bay is sheltered, which is why the village is where it is, and the swimming is calm.
- Nothing is accessible by vehicle, which matters for heavy luggage or limited mobility.
