The crossing
Roughly one to two hours depending on the vessel, on the western Cyclades line running Piraeus, Kythnos, Serifos, Sifnos, Kimolos, Milos and sometimes on to Folegandros and Santorini.
Sailings are frequent through the season and thin outside it. Kimolos sits between the two and is a worthwhile stop in its own right.
Boats leave Milos from Adamas, its main port, and land at Kamares on Sifnos.
Why the pair works
They are genuinely unalike, which is the point.
Milos is a volcanic island of extraordinary geology: Sarakiniko’s white moonscape, the coloured cliffs at Firiplaka, Kleftiko’s sea caves reached by boat, and mining history all over it. It is a landscape island, and you spend the days in or on the water.
Sifnos is greener, gentler and older-feeling: terraced hillsides, hundreds of chapels, an inland capital, a medieval cliff village at Kastro, and the best network of waymarked footpaths in the Cyclades after Andros. It is also the island Greeks name first for food, with a distinct ceramic-pot cooking tradition.
Four nights on each is a very good ten days, with the ferry to Athens at either end.
Practical notes
- Milos has an airport, Sifnos does not, so the natural shape is fly in to Milos and ferry out through Sifnos to Piraeus, or the reverse by boat both ways.
- Cars go on the conventional ferries. Milos genuinely wants a car; Sifnos does not.
- Wind stops the fast craft first, as everywhere in the Cyclades.
