Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades and one of the closest of the group to Athens, which makes this an easy crossing and an unusually short one for a real island.

The crossing
From Piraeus, roughly two hours on high-speed craft and about four on a conventional ferry. Syros is a hub in its own right, so a great many sailings call there on the way to Mykonos, Tinos, Paros and Naxos.
There is also a small airport with short flights from Athens, which is rare for an island this accessible by sea and useful in winter when the boats thin.
The boat lands at Ermoupoli, and this is where the island stops resembling the Cyclades you have seen in photographs.
Why it looks different
Syros was the main port of Greece in the nineteenth century, before Piraeus took the trade. What it built with that money is still standing: Ermoupoli is a neoclassical town of marble squares, an opera house modelled on La Scala, a grand town hall, and painted mansions climbing two hills.
It is also, uniquely among the Cyclades, half Catholic. One of the two hills, Ano Syros, is a medieval Catholic settlement founded under Venetian rule and still Catholic today; the other, Vrontado, is Orthodox. Two cathedrals face each other across the town.
The result is an island with a real year-round population and an actual winter, rather than a season.
Practical notes
- Ermoupoli is the destination, not a port you pass through. Most visitors stay in the town rather than at a beach.
- The beaches are on the south and west: Galissas, Kini, Vari, Azolimnos. They are modest by Cycladic standards, which is part of why the island stays quiet.
- The bus network is good and the island is small, so a car is optional.
- It works in winter, unlike almost every other Cycladic island.
Where it fits
Syros pairs naturally with Tinos and Mykonos, both a short hop away, and it is a much better first or last night than an airport hotel.
