The crossing
Ios sits on the central Cyclades line, between Naxos and Santorini, and the same run takes in Paros and Mykonos on some sailings.
- High-speed craft: roughly four hours, sometimes less with few stops.
- Conventional ferries: roughly six to eight hours depending on the calls, cheaper, steadier in wind, and they carry cars.
The boat lands at Ormos, the port, with Chora on the hill above it and Mylopotas beach around the headland.
Where Ios sits in a trip
The far more common way to reach Ios is not from Athens at all. It is a short hop from Santorini, under an hour, and Ios is usually a stop on a chain rather than a destination flown to.
That is the honest planning advice: if you are already doing Paros, Naxos and Santorini, Ios drops into the middle of that string for the cost of one short crossing.
What you are arriving at
Ios has a reputation as the party island, and in July and August that reputation is accurate: Chora’s lanes are a dense grid of bars and it goes very late.
It also has, in May, June, September and October, the thing the reputation hides: a genuinely beautiful Cycladic village on a hill, a long sand beach at Mylopotas, quiet coves round the coast, and Homer’s supposed tomb at the northern end.

Practical notes
- Wind cancels the fast boats first. If your flight home is the next morning, take the conventional ferry or leave a day.
- Buses run port to Chora to Mylopotas, frequently in season, which means you do not need a car.
- Book August accommodation months ahead, and expect noise anywhere near Chora.
