The fortress
You enter over a stone bridge across a moat, through a gate in a wall that is far larger than the modern village behind it. Inside is mostly open ground: the shells of buildings, a Turkish bath, a Venetian church, cisterns, and a granite column standing on its own.
The scale is the point. This was a fortified town rather than a garrison post, and walking from the gate to the far end takes a while.
At the seaward tip a smaller gate leads out along a causeway to the Bourtzi, an octagonal tower on its own islet, built by the Ottomans and standing alone in the water. It is the image Methoni is known by, and you can walk out to it.
The site is open and largely unrailed, with drops to the water. There is not much shade.
The eyes of the Republic
Methoni and Koroni were the eyes of the Venetian Republic, holding the sea route from Venice to the eastern Mediterranean. Pilgrims to the Holy Land stopped here; so did the galleys. The two castles were held, lost and retaken repeatedly by Venice and the Ottomans over four centuries.
The village and the beach
The modern village outside the walls is small, with tavernas and rooms, and there is a decent sandy beach right beside the castle with a view of the walls along it.
Getting there and how long
About 50 minutes from Kalamata, and about 20 from Pylos. It pairs with Koroni in a day, or with Voidokilia up the coast.
One night, or a long half day.
