Ierapetra: the southernmost town in Europe, and a working one

Ierapetra holds a title that gets printed on a lot of signs: it is the southernmost town in Europe.

This is not a resort. It is a working town of some size on the south coast, with a seafront, a fort, a market, and the ordinary business of a Cretan town going on around the visitors.

What is there

  • The Kales fortress, a small Venetian fort standing at the end of the harbour mole, square and low, guarding what was once a significant port.
  • The old quarter behind the front, a pocket of narrow lanes with an Ottoman mosque and fountain, and a house that local tradition says Napoleon slept in on his way to Egypt.
  • The archaeological museum, small, in an old school building.
  • Long beaches running east and west of the town, grey sand and shingle, unglamorous and usable.

The reason most visitors come

Chrissi, the uninhabited island an hour offshore, with cedar forest and white shell sand. The boats leave from Ierapetra harbour, and for a large share of visitors the town is the departure point rather than the destination.

That is worth knowing in both directions: if you are doing Chrissi, you are coming here anyway, and the town is worth an evening once the boat is back.

The greenhouses, which explain the landscape

The coastal plain either side of Ierapetra is covered in plastic greenhouse tunnels, and they are the first thing most people notice on the drive in. They are not decorative and nobody pretends otherwise, but they are the reason this is a working town rather than a seasonal one, and the reason it stays open in winter.

Practical notes

  • It is hot. The southernmost claim is not marketing; the town has a long, dry, intense summer.
  • The swimming season runs long, which is why the shoulder months work here better than on the north coast. See shoulder season in Greece.
  • Agios Nikolaos is about 45 minutes north over the isthmus, which is the narrowest point of Crete.
