Firostefani: the caldera view without the caldera crowd

Firostefani is the stretch of caldera rim immediately north of Fira, and it is the answer to a question a lot of Santorini visitors ask too late: where can I have the view without the crush?

It is a ten-minute walk from the middle of Fira along the rim path. The view is the same caldera, the same volcano islets, the same sunset. The noise is not.

What is there

Not a great deal, which is the point:

  • The rim path, running north from Fira through the village and on towards Imerovigli, one of the best short walks in Greece.
  • Agios Gerasimos, the blue-domed church whose dome, framed against the caldera, is on more Santorini postcards than most people realise.
  • Terraces belonging to hotels and tavernas, cut into the cliff, most of them quieter than their equivalents in Fira.
  • A small square back from the rim where the village does its ordinary business.

Why stay here

Firostefani is the compromise base on the rim: the walkability of Fira without its evening volume, and lower prices than Oia at the far end. Our where to stay in Santorini guide sets the rim villages against each other properly.

The walk is what makes it work. Fira for shops, buses and the museums is ten minutes south; Imerovigli and the Skaros Rock path are twenty minutes north; the whole rim is a single evening stroll.

Practical notes

  • The rim path is steps and slopes, and luggage on it is a known misery. Check how far your room is from a road.
  • Sunset is visible from the whole rim; you do not need to be in Oia, and the buses back from Oia after sunset are the reason to be glad about that.
  • Little shade on the path itself in the middle of the day.

It is the usual compromise: the view and the walkability of the rim, quieter than Fira and cheaper than Oia.

Can you see the sunset from Firostefani?

Yes. The whole rim faces the caldera, so the sunset is visible without going to Oia.
