For visitors it is the island’s antidote: cool air, forest, wide views, and almost nobody.
What is up there
- Forest, dense in places and open in others, with the trees thinning towards the summit ridge.
- Views on a clear day across to Ithaca, Zakynthos and the mainland mountains.
- Semi-wild horses, which graze the higher slopes and are the sighting people hope for. They are wild animals: watch them from a distance and do not feed them.
- Marked paths along the ridge from the parking areas.
Getting up
A road climbs from the main island highway most of the way to the top, ending near the summit ridge with parking. The last section is unsurfaced in places and narrow; ordinary cars manage it in dry conditions, slowly.
From the parking, walking to the summit and along the ridge takes an hour or two depending on how far you go.
When to go
Spring is the best time: the forest is fresh, the wildflowers are out and the air is clear. Summer works if you go early, and it is ten degrees cooler than the coast, which is its own argument in August.
Cloud can sit on the summit and take the view away entirely. If the top is in cloud from below, the view will not be there when you arrive.
Practical notes
- No facilities on the mountain: no cafe, no water, no shelter.
- Layers. The summit is windy and cool even in July.
- Fire risk is real in a conifer forest in summer; nothing that burns, ever.
- Combine it with the island’s east coast, since the road up leaves the highway between Argostoli and Sami.
