That combination is why it appears on every list of the island’s beaches, and why it is busier than a beach at the bottom of a gorge would otherwise be.
Getting down there is the decision
Preveli is not a beach you park beside. There are two honest options:
- The path down from the upper car park. Steep, rocky, exposed, with a long flight of stone steps and no shade for much of it. Going down is manageable for most people; coming back up in the afternoon heat is the part that catches people out.
- By boat, from Plakias or Agia Galini in season. You land on the sand, you skip the climb entirely, and you leave when the boat leaves.
If anyone in the group is unsure about a long steep climb in heat, take the boat. This is the beach where that decision matters most on Crete.
The palms, and the fire
The palm grove along the river is the reason the place looks tropical. It burned in a wildfire in 2010, which killed a large part of the grove, and the palms have been regrowing since. What you see today is a recovering forest rather than the one in older photographs, and that is worth knowing before you compare the two.
What the beach is like
Coarse sand and pebble, open to the Libyan Sea, with the gorge mouth and the river behind. There are basic seasonal facilities, and the river is shallow enough to wade a good way upstream, which is the thing children remember.
It is exposed: when the south wind blows the sea gets rough here, and there is little natural shade beyond the palms along the river.
Practical notes
- Water and shoes. The climb needs both, and the riverbed is stony.
- Go early. The path is worst in the middle of the day, and the beach is at its emptiest before the boats arrive.
- The monastery above shares the name and is a separate visit, up on the plateau with its own history and views.
- Facilities are seasonal, so treat everything as closed out of season until you can confirm otherwise.

Why is Preveli beach famous?
Because a freshwater river lined with palm trees runs out of a gorge and meets the sea on the sand, which makes it look unlike any other beach on Crete.
How do you get to Preveli beach?
Either down a steep rocky path with stone steps from the car park above, or by seasonal boat from Plakias or Agia Galini, which avoids the climb.

Can you swim in the river at Preveli?
You can wade and swim in the shallow freshwater river behind the beach as well as in the sea, which is the main attraction for families.
