The reason is the cliffs. The pale volcanic rock behind the sand has been carved by wind and water into ridges, folds and hollows that look sculpted rather than eroded. It is the one stretch of Santorini coast that photographs as landscape rather than as beach.
What it is like on the ground
Grey-black volcanic sand and pebble, a long shallow bay, and those cliffs running behind it. There is a marina at the eastern end, which is unusual for a Santorini beach and gives the place a working feel: boats, a few tavernas, and less of the lounger economy that dominates further north.
There are organised sections with sunbeds, but far fewer of them than at Perivolos or Kamari, and long stretches with nothing at all. If you want an empty patch of sand on Santorini in August, this coast is the closest compromise you will find.
What it does not have
Being honest about the trade is the point of a page like this:
- Very little natural shade. The cliffs shade a narrow strip at certain hours and nothing at midday.
- Limited facilities compared with the main strip, which is exactly why it is quieter.
- Wind. The same wind that carved the cliffs blows across the bay, which is a relief in August and a nuisance in a strong meltemi.
- No caldera view. This is the flat side of the island. For the postcard you want Oia or Imerovigli.
Who it suits
People who have seen the caldera, done the busy beaches, and want an afternoon where nothing is happening. Also photographers, who come for the cliffs in low light rather than for the swimming.
It is a poor choice if you want the day organised around a beach bar, or if you are travelling with children who need shallow, sheltered water and facilities close by.
Getting there
Vlychada is at the southern end of the island, reached by road past the Perissa and Perivolos strip or directly from Fira across the flat interior. There is parking near the marina, and the bus network reaches this coast in season but less frequently than the main strip.
