Veria: fifty Byzantine churches, mostly behind doors

Many are locked and many look like houses from outside. The Church of Christ, with a substantial fourteenth-century fresco cycle by Kalliergis, is the one to see and is normally open.

The quarters

  • Kyriotissa, the old Christian quarter, stepped lanes and overhanging houses.
  • Barbouta, the Jewish quarter, one of the best-preserved in Greece: a tight block of houses around a courtyard by the river, with the synagogue at its heart. Veria’s Jewish community was ancient and was destroyed in the Holocaust; the quarter is maintained as a memorial as much as a monument.
  • The Bema of Saint Paul, a marble monument in the centre marking where Paul is traditionally said to have preached to the Beroeans.

The setting

The town stands above the plain with the Aliakmonas valley below and Mount Vermio behind. That mountain carries two ski centres, Seli and Tria Pigadia, which makes Veria a winter town as well.

The Aristotle school site at nearby Naoussa, where Aristotle is said to have taught the young Alexander, is a shaded park with springs.

What is nearby

  • Vergina and the Macedonian royal tombs, about twenty minutes.
  • Edessa and its waterfalls, about forty-five minutes.
  • Thessaloniki, just over an hour.

Veria, Vergina and Edessa make a coherent two-day Macedonian loop and are usually done together.

Getting there and how long

About an hour and a quarter from Thessaloniki by road, and it is on the rail line.
