What it is
A single sandy bay a couple of kilometres long, shallow and calm, with a strip of hotels, rooms and tavernas along the front and three small islands sitting just offshore, which give the view its shape.
It is a straightforward package and domestic resort, busy in season and modest out of it. Nobody claims it is beautiful; the sand is good, the bay shelves very gradually and stays shallow a long way out, and it is fifteen minutes from a town worth eating in.
The islands
Koronisi, the nearest, is a few hundred metres out and people swim to it. Romvi and Daskalio are further, the last with a chapel on it. Pedalos and small boats go out in season, and the islands are the reason the bay photographs better than most resort beaches.
Why people actually base here
The Argolid is the densest concentration of major ancient sites in Greece, and Tolo sits in the middle of it with a beach attached:
- Epidaurus and its theatre, half an hour.
- Mycenae, about forty minutes.
- Ancient Tiryns, ten minutes, with walls the ancients themselves thought superhuman.
- Nafplio, fifteen minutes, for the evening.
- Asini, the ancient acropolis on the headland at the end of the bay, free and unfenced.
Families in particular use Tolo this way: sites in the morning, beach in the afternoon.
Getting there and how long
About two hours from Athens by road past the Corinth Canal, with buses via Nafplio.
Three or four nights if you are touring the Argolid, which is what it is for.

Why stay in Tolo rather than Nafplio?
Nafplio has no real beach. Tolo has a long shallow sandy one and is fifteen minutes away, which suits families touring the Argolid sites.
What are the islands off Tolo?

What ancient sites are near Tolo?
