Thessaloniki
A Thessaloniki itinerary: two days, one out
Two focused days cover Thessaloniki: the monument core, the markets and food streets, and the waterfront. Add a third for one trip north - Meteora, Mount Olympus or a Halkidiki beach day.
What you are actually coming for
Thessaloniki is Greece’s eating capital, holds 15 UNESCO-listed Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments, and unlike the islands it works year-round. If food and layered history rank above postcard views for you, it is the best city break in Greece. If your whole trip is beach-first island time, it will not out-beach the Cyclades and you should skip it.
Base in the centre, then pick your neighbourhood by evening
First-timers should base in the city centre around Aristotelous Square, within a ten-minute walk of the monuments and markets. From there the choice is what you want your evenings to be:
- Ladadika for nightlife.
- The waterfront for gulf views.
- Ano Poli for atmosphere - the old upper town.
- Kalamaria is the calm seaside base local families favour.
Where to stay in Thessaloniki covers them.
Day one: the monument core
The Byzantine and Paleochristian churches are the reason for the UNESCO listing, and they are scattered through the working city rather than fenced into a site - which is the pleasure of them. The White Tower, the Rotunda and Agios Dimitrios anchor the day.
Things to do in Thessaloniki covers what each one is.
Day two: markets, food streets and the waterfront
The markets and the food streets are the half of Thessaloniki that no monument list captures, and they are the reason people come back. Give them a whole day rather than an hour between churches.
Finish on the waterfront promenade, which is flat, long and the best thing in the city at the end of an afternoon.
Day three: one trip north
One, not three. Day trips from Thessaloniki sets out the real options - Meteora, Mount Olympus and the Halkidiki beaches - and which of them a single day can actually hold.
If you have children
The flat waterfront promenade, boat rides on the gulf and easy beach days make it workable with kids: distances are short and the food is unfussy. Kalamaria is the calm seaside base local families favour.
When to come
It works year-round, which is the thing that separates it from almost everywhere else on this site. A winter Thessaloniki trip is a real trip rather than a compromise, and the food does not have a season.
