Beside it, the open-air Kapani market does what Modiano used to: fish, meat, vegetables, cheese, spices, sold to people cooking dinner.
What it is now
A restored hall with stalls around a central space, mixing produce sellers with places to eat and drink. It is busiest in the evening, when the surrounding streets fill and the market becomes part of the city’s night rather than its morning.
That change is the interesting part: this is a market rebuilt as a social space, which is what markets across Europe have become, and it happened here recently enough that people still argue about it.
Kapani next door
If you want the older version, walk into Kapani. It is narrow, loud, covered in places with corrugated roofing, and entirely functional. The tavernas tucked into it are among the best value in the centre and are the reason our where to eat in Thessaloniki page treats the market streets as their own district.
Where it fits
The markets sit between Aristotelous Square and Egnatia, in the middle of everything, so they are a stop rather than a trip. Morning for the produce, evening for the eating and drinking.
