So the airport-to-Oia journey is a change, not a ride, and that shapes every option below.
The bus, and its two catches
The bus network is cheap, reasonably frequent and the backbone of getting around Santorini without a car. Getting to Oia means going via Fira.
Two catches, and both bite on this particular route:
- Fares are cash-only. Arrive with coins and notes rather than a card.
- The Oia buses are jammed around sunset, when everyone on the island wants the same trip at the same time. If your flight lands in the late afternoon and you are heading for Oia with luggage, you are joining that queue at its worst hour.
Taxis are the island’s weak spot
Worth stating plainly, because it is the single most common way this journey goes wrong: there are famously few taxis on Santorini, and on cruise and sunset hours you can wait a long time or not get one at all.
That is not a warning about price. It is a warning about availability. If a taxi is your plan, it should be a pre-booked transfer rather than a rank you walk up to.
A hire car, and when it is not the answer
Rent a car for one day if you want the interior and the beaches on your own schedule. But you do not need one for a Fira-and-Oia trip - you would spend more time parking than driving, and both towns are small, stepped and closed to through traffic.
So if Oia is your base and the caldera is your trip, a car is a day-rate you use once rather than a solution to this transfer.
The thing to skip
Skip the quad bikes and ATVs, however fun they look. The cliff roads are busy, fast and unforgiving, and rented quads and scooters are a common cause of holiday injuries here. That applies double with a suitcase.
What to actually do
Pre-book a transfer for the arrival, especially if you land near sunset or you are staying in Oia rather than Fira. Use the bus for everything afterwards, once you are unencumbered and can wait out a full one.
