The tunnel
The feature people come for is a narrow tunnel cut through the hillside in the 1930s to carry water to farmland, which visitors can walk through: ankle-deep water, low headroom, dark in the middle, and about a couple of hundred metres long.
Be honest with yourself before you go in:
- It is enclosed and dark, with light only at the ends. Anyone claustrophobic should take the path over the hill instead, which reaches the same lake in a few minutes.
- The floor is uneven and wet, and the water level varies.
- It is not lit and phones become torches, which means one hand occupied.
Plenty of people love it. It is simply not a neutral walk, and the alternative path exists for a reason.
What else is there
The valley itself: shade, running water, a walk of twenty minutes end to end, and the lake with its small dam. It is a place to sit rather than to tick off, and it works best as a break in a driving day rather than a destination.
Practical notes
- Take shoes you can wet if you plan on the tunnel.
- It gets busy with coach groups at midday; early and late are calmer.
- Parking is at the entrance, and the site is a short signposted drive inland from the coast road near Kolymbia.
- Shade is everywhere, which is the point.
