It is the antidote to the harbour towns, and it is twenty minutes from either of them.
What is there
Whitewashed houses stacked on a slope, lanes too narrow and too stepped for cars, bougainvillea, a couple of squares with cafes, and the large twin-towered church of Agia Triada in marble at the top of the village.
There is no beach, no nightlife and nothing organised to do, which is the point. An hour of wandering plus a long coffee is the visit.
The Byzantine Road
The best reason to come is the walk. A marble-paved path, the old road across the island, runs down the valley from Lefkes towards the village of Prodromos. Sections of the paving are genuinely old and the route is walkable in about an hour downhill, through terraces and past chapels.
Practical notes for the walk:
- Go downhill from Lefkes, and arrange to be collected at the far end, or walk back up.
- Early morning in summer; there is little shade on the open sections.
- Proper shoes: marble worn smooth is slippery, especially in the wet.
Fitting it in
Lefkes sits on the main road across the island, so it slots into a day between Parikia and the east coast, or on the way to Golden Beach. Buses run through the village in season.
Combine it with Naoussa in the evening if you want the full contrast: the mountain village in the afternoon, the harbour at dinner.
