Most visitors see it as a rushed day trip from Kos, get bussed to the crater for forty minutes and leave. Staying a night is a completely different island.
The caldera
The interior of Nisyros is a broad flat-floored caldera with several craters in it, the largest called Stefanos. A path leads down onto the floor, which is pale, cracked and bare.
The ground is hot, sulphur vents hiss around the edges, and the smell is unmistakable. This is a live geothermal field rather than a viewpoint: the surface is fragile in places, the vents are genuinely hot, and it is marked accordingly. We are not going to tell you it is safe or unsafe; what we can say is that it is an active volcanic surface and the marked route exists for a reason.
The rim villages
- Nikia, on the southern rim, is the striking one: whitewashed, with a round mosaic-paved square and a view straight down into the crater.
- Emporios, on the north rim, is largely abandoned and quietly atmospheric, with natural steam saunas in the rock below the village.
- Mandraki, the port, is the main settlement, with a monastery in a cave in the cliff above it and a Venetian castle.
What else there is
Very little, and that is the appeal once the day boats have gone. The coast is dark volcanic pebble, the swimming is off rocks and small bays, and the evening in Mandraki belongs to the island rather than to visitors.
Getting there and how long
Ferries and excursion boats from Kos, with connections through the Dodecanese. No airport.
One night transforms the visit. Two if you want to walk the rim as well as the floor.

Common questions
Can you walk into the volcano on Nisyros?
Yes. A path leads down onto the caldera floor and to the Stefanos crater, across ground that is hot and vented. It is an active geothermal field with a marked route.
How do you get to Nisyros?
By ferry or excursion boat from Kos, and by Dodecanese connections. There is no airport.
Is Nisyros worth more than a day trip?
Considerably. Day trips give the crater about forty minutes. Staying a night gives you the rim villages and the island after the boats leave.
What is Nikia?
The village on the southern rim of the caldera, whitewashed, with a round mosaic-paved square and a view down into the crater.
Does Nisyros have beaches?
Small ones of dark volcanic pebble, plus swimming off rocks. The beaches are not why people come.
