The Diros caves near Areopoli are among the best in Greece, and they are unusual in how you see them.

Much of the visit is by boat along an underground river, through chambers of stalactites, with a short walk at the end.
Where they sit
Near Areopoli, which is the effective capital of the Mani - a stone town with a good square, and the natural base for this end of the peninsula.
The Mani divides: Messinian Mani in the north-west is the greener side, and the bare, tower-studded, spectacular part runs south of it. Laconian Mani on the east coast is the emptiest.
Cape Tainaron at the very tip has a lighthouse, a Roman mosaic and one of the ancient entrances to the underworld - which, on a peninsula this bare, is the other thing worth the drive.
The rest of what the Mani holds
The Mani is dense with small Byzantine churches, many from the tenth to thirteenth centuries, standing alone in fields or in villages, often with frescoes.
Most are locked; asking in the village is the traditional way in. That is not a workaround - it is how it is done, and it is one of the more rewarding things about travelling here.
Vathia is the tower village people photograph.
Practical notes
Getting there: by road from Kalamata in the north-west or Sparta in the north-east, both under two hours to Areopoli.
A car is essential. This is not a bus peninsula.
Four nights. The distances are short and the roads are slow - that combination is the Mani in one line, and it catches people who plan by the map.
We print no cave opening hours or ticket price. Our own guide flags that cave opening arrangements change, and that is exactly the fact not to freeze on a page.
Common questions
How much of the visit is by boat? Much of it, with a short walk at the end. That is what makes Diros different from other Greek show caves.
Are the caves suitable for everyone? We do not rate access. It is an underground river in a cave system - look at the current arrangements before committing, and nothing here certifies anything.
What else is nearby? Areopoli itself, the tower villages south of it, and Cape Tainaron at the tip.
