Where to stay in Ioannina

Ioannina is a substantial university city rather than a resort, which changes the where-to-stay question: you are not choosing between beach strips, you are choosing between the walled Ottoman citadel, the lakefront and the modern city, and deciding how early you want to be on the road to the mountains.

Inside the Kastro, if the old town is why you came. The walled citadel on the lake shore is the best-preserved Ottoman old town in Greece and it is still lived in, with lanes of houses inside the walls. Sleeping in it puts the two inner strongholds, the mosques and the museums on your doorstep, and it means you see the quarter in the evening and early morning rather than only in the middle of the day.

The lakefront, if you want the city’s own evening. Ioannina has a lakefront promenade the city uses in the evening, and basing near it means you are in the middle of that rather than walking to it. This is the choice for anyone who wants a city stay rather than a heritage one.

The modern city, if this is a base rather than a destination. Ioannina is the gateway to Zagori and the Vikos gorge, to Dodona half an hour south, and to Metsovo and the Pindus to the east. If your days are going to be spent out of town, a base with easy parking and a fast exit onto the road matters more than the view from the window, and that is worth being honest about.

How the base changes the mountains. Zagori is half an hour to the nearest villages and more to the far ones, and its roads are narrow and winding and can be snowbound in winter. If you intend early starts up there, the practical position beats the atmospheric one. If you intend one gorge day and two city days, the citadel wins.

A note on the season, which most guides skip. This is mountain country in the northwest, not the Aegean. Winter here is a real winter, and the roads that matter to you may be affected by it. That shapes when you come as much as where you sleep.

How long to give it. Enough for the citadel, the island and one trip out. Nisi, the island in the lake, is a comfortable half day on its own, reached by a ten-minute boat from the waterfront, and Perama cave sits on the edge of town.
