Where to eat in Athens

Athens is one of the cheapest capital cities in Europe to eat well in, and the trick is knowing that the best tables sort by neighbourhood, not by cuisine. The same central districts that decide where you sleep decide where you eat, and they behave differently after dark.

Plaka feeds the postcard. The lanes under the Acropolis are wall-to-wall tavernas, and the honest rule is the one every guidebook repeats because it is true: the closer a table sits to a famous view, the more the view is what you are paying for. Plaka still holds genuinely well-rated kitchens - the cards below include one - but the difference between them and the lane-corner tourist menu is exactly what the ratings are for.

The market quarter is where Athens shops for dinner. Around the central market, off Athinas and Evripidou streets, the city’s food trade runs as it has for a century: delis, spice merchants, and the tavernas that grew out of them. Eating here puts you in working Athens rather than visiting Athens, and it is the neighbourhood most worth crossing town for.

Psyrri eats late and loud. The district north of Monastiraki turned from workshops into the city’s going-out quarter, and its tables run later than anywhere else on this page: dinner starts when other neighbourhoods are finishing, and the street noise is part of the deal. It is the right choice on a night you want the evening to keep going, and the wrong one if you have an early flight.

Makrigianni and Koukaki eat like locals. The streets south of the Acropolis - below the museum, along Veikou and Makrigianni - hold the neighbourhood tavernas and all-day kitchens that serve the people who live there. If you took the where to stay guide’s advice and based yourself on this side, your best dinners are a street away.

Syntagma is the practical dinner. The blocks off the square hold solid, unpretentious kitchens that fill with office workers at lunch and travellers at night - the right answer when you want to eat well without building an evening around it.

How the places below were chosen. Each card names a real, currently trading place selected by the people who actually ate there: it clears a review-count floor and a rating floor on TripAdvisor or Google, with no contradiction on the other platform, and it carries the date we last checked it. We have not eaten our way across Athens, so no card describes a dish - it says what kind of place it is, where it is, and that thousands of diners rate it consistently high.

What this page will not do. No prices - Athens menus move, and a number printed here would already be wrong. No “locals-only secrets” - a place either earns its rating in public or it is not named here.

Start at Athens for the city itself, and Greek food and drink for how menus, mezedes and ordering actually work.
