Where to stay in Andros

Andros is mountainous, the distances are real, and the port, the capital and the trailheads are scattered across it. That makes the base question here more consequential than on a flatter island, and it has four clear answers rather than a vague spectrum.

Chora, on the east coast, for museums, mansions and an evening. The capital is the one with some life in it: neoclassical captains’ mansions, marble-paved streets, the contemporary-art museum and the maritime and archaeological ones. The capital’s own beach, Nimborio, is a short walk away. Choose it if the island’s culture is why you came, and if you want an evening that is low-key rather than empty.

Batsi, on the west, for the beach. The liveliest beach base, with the most organised sand, family-friendly coves and the shortest run to the port. This is the conventional beach-holiday answer on Andros, and it is a good one.

Gavrio, the port, for early ferries and the northern trailheads. It suits an early boat and the north end of the walking network, at the cost of being the most functional of the four. Nobody comes to Andros for Gavrio, but the right trip makes it the right base.

Korthi, in the south, for quiet. The quietest and most local of the four, and the choice when you want the island at its slowest.

The car, which changes the trip more here than on flatter islands. The best beaches and trailheads sit off the bus routes, the roads wind, and the distances are real. A local KTEL bus network does link Gavrio, Batsi, Chora and Korthi, timed to meet the ferries and liable to shift when a boat is late, but it skips most of the trailheads and the wilder beaches, so it serves a town-to-town trip better than a touring one. Why the base interacts with the wind. Andros takes the meltemi full on across its north and west, so a west-coast base means some days you cross the island to swim. That is fine with a car and a real constraint without one. The beaches page explains the orientation rule properly.

And with the season. The best walking is in spring and autumn, when the ground is green and the streams are running; high summer is hot and the exposed upper stretches catch the wind. If the trails are why you are coming, the month matters more than the base. The shoulder season covers it.
