The three settlements
- Agios Georgios, the port, a small bay with the boats, a few tavernas and most of the rooms.
- Megalo Chorio, the main village up the hill, with the church and the square.
- Mikro Chorio, smaller again, nearly empty.
Everything is walkable. There is no bank and no cash machine on the island, which is the single practical fact visitors most often learn too late. Bring cash.
What you do
Very little, deliberately. You swim, you walk between the villages and the coves, you eat fish at the port, and you watch the ferry come in as the event of the day.
Beaches are small, pebbled and reached on foot: Spilia, Gaidouravlakos, Poros and Tholos, which has ancient remains beside it.
The island is close to the Turkish coast and the strait is busy with shipping, visible from the higher ground.
Getting there
On the Dodecanese ferry line between Samos, Patmos and Rhodes, with several sailings a week rather than daily, plus a small local link to Patmos and Samos.
Check the schedule carefully in both directions before you commit. Getting on is easier than getting off.
