Saliara, usually called Marble Beach, is the extreme version: a small cove of brilliant white against clear water, reached down a rough track.

Why it is white
Thassos has been quarried for white marble since antiquity and still is.
You see it in the road cuttings, in the dust on the leaves near the workings, and in the water: some of the island’s beaches are white because the sand is ground marble.
Saliara is where that goes furthest. The brilliance is not a filter or a trick of the light - it is the material.
The track
Reached down a rough track, which is the one practical thing to know and the reason the cove is not busier than it is.
We give no length, surface grade or vehicle recommendation. Our own guide says “rough track” and nothing more, and that is a judgement to make when you can see it rather than from a page.
The other Thassos beaches
Golden Beach and Paradise on the east coast are the long sandy ones.
Aliki, on the south-east, is the good one: a double bay on a headland with an ancient marble quarry running into the sea and columns still lying where they were cut.
That pairing is the island in miniature: the marble is the beach at Saliara and the history at Aliki, and both are the same rock.
The island around them
A round, pine-covered island off the coast of northern Greece, reached by a short car ferry, with no need to fly.
A single ring road runs around the island, roughly 100 kilometres, and almost everything sits on it. The interior is mountain and pine.
Limenas, the main town on the north coast, is built on top of the ancient city: an agora, a theatre cut into the hillside above the harbour, and an archaeological museum. The acropolis walk above the theatre is the best hour on the island.
Practical notes
Getting there: by car ferry from Keramoti, near Kavala airport, in about 35 minutes, or from Kavala in longer. There is no airport on the island. Thessaloniki to Thassos covers the journey.
Take the car. The point of Thassos is the ring road, and Saliara is off it down that track.
Four or five nights if you want the coast and the interior.
Common questions
Why is the sand white? It is ground marble. The island has been quarried since antiquity.
Is the track passable? We say only what our guide says: it is rough. Look at it before committing a hire car to it.
Is there anything at the beach? We make no claim about facilities - our pages describe the cove and not its services.
