On a hot day, shade and fresh water is a genuinely different proposition from a beach, and very few islands offer it.
Why it is on our beaches page at all
Because it competes with a beach for the same afternoon, and often wins it.
Samos is green, mountainous and much bigger than it looks, and the interior is where the island differs from its neighbours. Potami is the point where that interior offers you a swim - which is not something you can plan on Naxos or Paros.
What our sources support, and what they do not

That is the whole of it, and we add nothing. No walk length in minutes, no pool depth, no water temperature, no season when the stream runs and when it does not. A stream is exactly the kind of thing that changes with the year, and a page written months earlier is the wrong place to learn it.
Nothing here is certified safe. Fresh water over rock is its own set of judgements. Make them when you can see it.
The rest of the Samos coast
Mikro and Megalo Seitani, on the wild north-west coast, sit inside a Natura 2000 protected area and are reached on foot along a coastal path rather than by car. That is exactly why they stay quiet, and our own guide calls them the best half-day on the coast here for anyone willing to walk.
The pattern will be familiar by now: on Samos the good swimming asks you to walk to it.
Beach names on Samos are durable geography, so you can plan around them safely. What is not durable is the water on any given day, so read the sea when you arrive. What the sea is like explains how the meltemi actually behaves.
The villages you pass on the way
Inland, Manolates and Vourliotes cling to the northern slopes among the pines and are worth the winding climb for the setting alone. Vourliotes is one of the stone villages clinging to the green northern slopes of Mount Ampelos, looking down to the sea.
Samos has an unusually well-developed network of marked walking trails linking stone villages, gorges, chapels and beaches across the forested slopes, and it makes the island as much a walker’s place as a swimmer’s. Hiking in Greece has the country picture.
Practical notes
You want a car for this. The waterfalls, the villages and the walk-in beaches are not a bus itinerary.

Is Potami a beach? It is fresh water - a stream walk to pools. Our own beaches guide files it as the freshwater alternative rather than as sand.
How long is the walk? Our sources say “short” and “shaded” and give no figure, so neither do we.
Can you swim in the pools? That is what our guide says they are for. Whether you should on the day you arrive is a judgement to make on site.
