The crossing
Roughly twenty minutes on high-speed craft and up to about forty on a conventional ferry, with many sailings a day through the season and a reduced but real service in winter.
Both are on the Rafina line, so the same boats that bring you from Athens work the hop.
Boats leave from Tinos town and arrive at Mykonos, at either the old port in town or the New Port at Tourlos a couple of kilometres north. Check which, because arriving at the New Port expecting to walk into town is a common and annoying mistake.
Why the pair works
Tinos is the great Orthodox pilgrimage island: the church of Panagia Evangelistria above the harbour, pilgrims arriving year-round, forty marble villages inland, hundreds of Venetian dovecotes on the terraces, and a food culture that has quietly become one of the best in the Cyclades.
Mykonos is the most internationally famous island in Greece: the windmills, Little Venice, the beach clubs, and prices to match.
Twenty minutes apart. Doing both in one trip gives you a genuine sense of the range of the Cyclades that neither island alone can.
The practical uses of this hop
- Fly into Mykonos, sleep on Tinos. Mykonos has the airport and the flights; Tinos has the rooms at a fraction of the price. For many trips this is simply the better arrangement.
- Escape for a day. If Mykonos in August is too much, Tinos is twenty minutes away and almost empty.
- Delos in between. Delos, the sacred island, is a short boat from Mykonos and one of the great archaeological sites of Greece.
Practical notes
- Around 15 August Tinos is full for the Dormition pilgrimage, and every boat on this route is busy.
- Wind stops the fast craft and this strait is exposed; conventional ferries keep going longer.
- Book cars ahead in high season, though neither island strictly needs one.
