The two answers

The seasonal direct boat. High-speed craft have run from Thessaloniki to Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos in summer in most recent years, taking a few hours. It is a genuine option in July and August and it does not exist in winter. Confirm the current season before booking anything around it.

Drive or bus to Volos, about two and a half hours south-west, and take the ferry from there. Volos is the main Sporades port, runs year-round, carries cars, and has far more sailings. This is the reliable answer.

Agios Konstantinos is the other mainland port, further south and better suited to travellers coming from Athens.

Why it is worth the detour

Because Volos and the Pelion are worth a night on their own account: a working port city with the tsipouradika eating tradition, and behind it a forested mountain peninsula of slate-roofed stone villages. Almost nobody flying into Skiathos ever sees it.

Splitting the journey turns an awkward connection into a better trip.

Once you are in the Sporades

The three islands are short hops apart. Skiathos has the airport, the beaches and the nightlife; Skopelos is greener and quieter; Alonissos sits inside the largest marine park in Europe.

Practical notes

  • The season is short. Sporades services thin sharply from October and the direct Thessaloniki link goes first.
  • A car needs the Volos route. The seasonal fast boats are passenger only.
  • Thessaloniki airport also has domestic connections, though flying to Skiathos usually means routing through Athens.
