It is artificial, a reservoir completed in the 1950s and named after the general who proposed it, built to irrigate the Thessalian plain and generate power. It has since become the region’s main holiday landscape.
The ring road
The way to see it is to drive around it: roughly 40 kilometres of road, most of it with the water in view, taking a comfortable half day with stops.
Around the shore:
- Neochori, on the high south side, with the widest view over the lake.
- Kalyvia Pezoulas and Pezoula, on the north, where most of the guesthouses are.
- The dam at the eastern end, with a viewpoint.
- Belokomiti and the small chapels on promontories, which is where the photographs come from.
What people do
This is a domestic destination and it operates like one: stone guesthouses with fireplaces, mountain food, and a season that peaks in autumn and winter rather than summer, which is the opposite of most of Greece.
On and around the water: kayaking, pedalos and small boats, cycling the ring road, horse riding, and walking in the fir forest. Swimming happens but the water is cold and it is not the point.
The Karditsa plain below and the Agrafa mountains west are the surrounding country, the latter genuinely wild.
Getting there and how long
About four and a half hours from Athens, three from Thessaloniki. Karditsa is the nearest town, half an hour away, and Meteora is about an hour north, which is the natural pairing.
Two nights, and a car is essential.
