It is also, unexpectedly, an industrial site: in the early nineteenth century the water of the gorge powered dozens of mills here, and Dimitsana was the principal gunpowder works of the Greek War of Independence.
The Water Power Museum
The open-air museum below the village is the thing to see, and it is genuinely well done. Restored installations along the stream show what the water actually did: a gunpowder mill, a tannery, a fulling mill for cloth, and a flour mill, each working and explained.
It makes sense of the whole valley in an hour, and it is the reason the village mattered nationally.
The gorge and the monasteries
The Lousios gorge below is short, deep and green, and the monasteries in it are built into the cliff faces:
- Prodromou, wedged under an overhang so the rock forms its roof, is the striking one and is still inhabited.
- Old Philosophou, older and largely ruined, is hidden in the rock and was reputedly a secret school during Ottoman rule.
- New Philosophou stands opposite.
A marked path runs down from Dimitsana through the gorge past all of them and on to Ancient Gortys, with its Asklepieion by the river. It is a proper half-day walk with real descent and ascent.
The village
Stone houses with tiled roofs, a library holding a notable collection of manuscripts and revolutionary-era documents, and views down the valley. Stemnitsa, another handsome stone village and once a silversmithing centre, is fifteen minutes away.
Both are winter destinations for Greeks as much as summer ones.
Getting there and how long
About three hours from Athens, and roughly an hour and a half from Sparta or Kalamata. A car is essential.
