Someone will be standing on the orchestra floor dropping a coin, tearing paper or striking a match while everyone else sits at the top listening. It works.
Why it works
The usual explanation is the limestone seating: the rows filter out low-frequency background sound, such as wind and crowd murmur, while reflecting the higher frequencies of a voice. Whether that is the whole story is still argued over, and the honest answer is that the effect is measurable and the full explanation is not settled.
The theatre was built in the fourth century BC and is still used: the Athens and Epidaurus Festival stages ancient drama here in summer, and seeing a performance is a completely different experience from visiting the empty bowl.
The sanctuary, which most people skip
The theatre was part of something larger. Epidaurus was the great healing sanctuary of Asklepios, effectively a hospital and pilgrimage site, and its remains spread across the site below the theatre:
- The abaton, the hall where patients slept in the expectation of a healing dream.
- The tholos, a circular building with a labyrinthine foundation whose purpose is still unclear, partly reconstructed.
- The stadium, cut into the ground with stone starting blocks still in place.
- The museum, which holds surgical instruments and the inscribed records of cures.
Most visitors give the theatre an hour and the sanctuary ten minutes. Reversing that is the better visit.
Getting there and fitting it in
Epidaurus is in the eastern Peloponnese, about half an hour from Nafplio and two hours from Athens, past the Corinth Canal. It pairs naturally with Nafplio as a base.
Allow two to three hours for the site and the museum. Performances are evening events and need booking well ahead.
