Limnos: a farmed island with a castle and a desert

A large, flat, farmed island in the north Aegean with a Venetian castle over its port, a genuine desert of sand dunes, and long beaches that stay empty in August.

An at a glance card for Limnos. What it is: A low agricultural island. Over the port: A vast Venetian castle. The oddity: A field of sand dunes. The beaches: Long, sandy, uncrowded. A car: Essential. It is large. One row is marked out as the thing that decides the visit. The conclusion reads: Flat, farmed, and the beaches stay empty. No prices appear.

That combination, farmland and empty sand, is unusual, and it is why Limnos feels less like a resort island than almost anywhere else of its size.

Myrina and the castle

Myrina, the main town, is built either side of a rock headland carrying an enormous Venetian and Byzantine castle, one of the largest fortress sites in the Aegean. Deer live inside the walls. The climb is short and the view takes in both of the town’s beaches and, on a clear evening, Mount Athos across the water.

The town itself has a stone-built quarter, a working fishing harbour and a long waterfront.

The strange landscape

Two things on Limnos are genuinely odd for a Greek island:

  • The sand dunes at Gomati, on the north coast: an actual dune field, wind-blown and shifting, that people call the desert of Limnos.
  • Falakro and the volcanic rock formations in the north-west, where wind erosion has carved the rock into hollowed, honeycombed shapes.

The island’s volcanic origins also show in its dark rock coasts and its thermal springs.

Beaches and the rest

Long, sandy and numerous, particularly on the south and east: Thanos, Nevgatis, Plati near the town, Keros on the east, which is a serious windsurfing and kitesurfing bay.

There is also Poliochni on the east coast, one of the oldest known settlements in Europe, and the ancient city of Hephaistia in the north-east.

Getting there and how long

Limnos has an airport with flights from Athens and Thessaloniki, and ferries from the mainland and along the north Aegean chain. A car is essential; the island is large and spread out.

Four nights minimum for the castle, the dunes, the north-east sites and a few beaches.
