If the National Archaeological Museum is antiquity in depth, the Benaki is Greece in sequence.
What is in it
The collection is broad rather than narrow: gold and pottery from the ancient world, icons and church silver, textiles, jewellery, costume, furniture, weapons and paintings, with reconstructed interiors from Greek houses that are among the most-loved rooms in the museum.
For visitors trying to understand why modern Greece looks and feels as it does, this is the most efficient two hours in Athens.
There is more than one Benaki
This is the part that confuses people. The Benaki operates several museums across the city, in different buildings with different subjects, including Islamic art, toys and childhood, and a large modern space used for contemporary exhibitions.
They are separate visits with separate entrances. If someone recommends “the Benaki”, ask which one, or you may travel across town to the wrong building.
Practical notes
- Allow two hours for the main museum.
- The rooftop cafe looks over the National Gardens and is one of the better museum terraces in the city.
- Free-entry days and evening openings have existed in the past; take the current position from the museum.
- It is indoors, which makes it a good middle-of-the-day choice in summer.
Where it fits
The museum sits between Syntagma and Kolonaki, minutes from the National Garden and a short walk from the Panathenaic Stadium, which makes a natural afternoon after a morning on the Acropolis.
