It was laid out in the nineteenth century as the palace garden, which is why it feels like a private park that the city was later handed.
What is inside
- Shaded paths under tall trees, with benches, ponds and running water.
- A duck pond and a small enclosure of animals and birds, which entertains children for exactly as long as it needs to.
- Ancient fragments scattered through the planting: column drums, capitals and mosaic pieces, unlabelled and half-hidden.
- The Zappeion, the neoclassical exhibition hall at the southern end, with its own colonnade and forecourt.
- A cafe in the middle, and another by the Zappeion.
Why it matters to a summer itinerary
Athens sightseeing is mostly open rock and marble with no cover. The heat rule that works is simple: sites in the morning, garden in the middle of the day, sites again late.
The garden also connects things. Enter at Syntagma, walk south through the shade, and come out beside the Panathenaic Stadium without ever walking a hot pavement. The Temple of Olympian Zeus is on the same route.
Practical notes
- Free, and open daily from sunrise to sunset.
- Paths are unpaved in places and shaded to the point of dimness, which is the appeal.
- Water fountains exist but are not everywhere; carry a bottle.
- It closes at dusk, so evening walks belong on the streets outside.
