For confident swimmers it is one of the best places in the Ionian to get in the sea. For anyone who wants to lie on sand with a bucket and spade, it is the wrong stop entirely.
Getting in and out
You enter from the rocks, using ladders or simply stepping off the flat shelves. The water is deep close in and often noticeably cooler than the sheltered east-coast bays, because this side of the island faces open sea.
Practical consequences:
- Water shoes make the platforms much easier.
- Getting out matters more than getting in: note where the ladders are before you swim off.
- Snorkelling is the main event, and visibility here is exceptional.
- When the west wind is up, the swell runs into the inlet and the place is best skipped.
What is there
A taverna on the rock above the inlet with tables looking down the cleft, some loungers on the platforms in season, and a car park a short walk up the track. That is the whole infrastructure.
Sunset over the open sea from the taverna terrace is the reason many people arrive late in the day rather than at lunchtime.
Where it fits on the island
Porto Limnionas is on the west coast, reached by a winding road across the interior from the resorts on the east. That drive is the price of admission, and it is also why the inlet is quieter than the famous stops on the northern coast.
Combine it with the west-coast viewpoints on the same run. Zakynthos’s headline sights, Navagio and the blue caves, are on the north coast and belong to a different day.
