The long sweet red pepper of Florina is a protected product used across Greek cooking, roasted and jarred, and the name on a label means this place. The winters are among the hardest in the country, with reliable snow, which makes it a domestic winter destination.
The town
A river runs through the middle with neoclassical and traditional houses along both banks, which is the pleasant part. There is a good archaeological museum and a modern art museum better than the town’s size suggests.
Florina is genuinely provincial, close to a border, and has the mixed feel that goes with that.
Prespa
The reason to come this far is 45 minutes north-west: the Prespa lakes, two connected lakes shared between Greece, Albania and North Macedonia, with the three-country point in the water.
It is one of the most important wetlands in Europe:
- Dalmatian pelicans breed here in the largest colony in the world, alongside great white pelicans, herons and cormorants.
- Bears and wolves are present in the surrounding mountains.
- Agios Achilleios, an island in the small lake reached by a long floating footbridge, has the ruins of a tenth-century basilica on it.
- Cave churches and hermitages are cut into the cliffs above the water, some reached only by boat, with Byzantine frescoes.
The area is a national park with visitor facilities in the villages of Psarades and Agios Germanos, and boats go out from Psarades.
Vitsi and the snow
The Vigla ski centre on Mount Verno is above the town, and the whole area is walking country in summer.
Getting there and how long
About two and a half hours from Thessaloniki by road, and it is on the rail line.
