It is the town’s living room and it is genuinely lovely. Most Greek towns have a square; Drama has water.
The town
Beyond the park, Drama is a working provincial city with an archaeological museum, some restored tobacco warehouses from the era when this was tobacco country, and the remains of Byzantine walls.
At Christmas the town runs Oneiroupoli, a large festive event that draws visitors from across northern Greece and is the busiest time of year here by a distance.
The wine
The plain around Drama has become one of the more interesting wine regions in Greece over the last few decades. Producers here work both international varieties and Greek ones, several estates are architecturally serious, and most take visitors by appointment.
It is a short drive from the town and the standard way to spend an afternoon.
The mountains
North of the town the ground rises to Mount Falakro, which has a ski centre and a season from around December, and beyond it to the Elatia forest, also called Karadere: a large old-growth spruce and pine forest on the Bulgarian border, one of the few of its kind in Greece, with walking, wildlife and genuine remoteness.
The Nestos river valley to the east has the gorge, a rail line through it and a cycling route.
Getting there and how long
About an hour and a half from Thessaloniki and forty minutes from Kavala, whose airport is the nearest.
