The one-line answer
Crete if you want mountains, gorges, villages, food and a wilder coast. Cyprus if you want a longer beach season, easier driving and a more built, more resort-shaped holiday.
Landscape
Crete is a mountain range in the sea. Three massifs run its length, the highest above 2,400 metres, cut by gorges including Samaria. The south coast is genuinely remote: villages reached by boat, and beaches with nothing behind them. You can be in snow and on sand within an hour.
Cyprus is drier and lower. The Troodos mountains reach around 1,950 metres and carry painted Byzantine churches, but much of the island is plain and scrub, and the coast is more continuously developed.
The season
Cyprus wins this and it is the strongest single argument for it. It sits further south and east, and the swimming season stretches well into autumn and starts earlier. Crete has the longest season in Greece, and Cyprus has a longer one still.
The archaeology
Crete has Knossos and the Minoan palaces: the oldest complex civilisation in Europe, and a genuinely distinct culture rather than a provincial version of the Greek mainland’s.
Cyprus has Roman mosaics at Paphos, neolithic Choirokoitia and the Kourion theatre, all excellent. If ancient history is the reason for the trip, Crete’s is more singular.
Food
Crete has the stronger food culture, and it is not close. Cretan cooking is its own regional cuisine with its own dishes, its own greens, its own cheeses and a mountain of raki. Cyprus has good meze and halloumi and a British-influenced resort layer over the top of it.
Driving and practicalities
- Cyprus drives on the left, a legacy of British administration, and has better and emptier main roads.
- Crete drives on the right, and its mountain roads are slow, spectacular and occasionally alarming.
- Cyprus is a country, not a Greek island: it has its own government, its own airports and a divided north, and it is not part of the Greek ferry system.
- Crete connects to the rest of Greece by ferry and by air, so it combines easily with Santorini or Athens. Cyprus does not combine with anything.
Cost
Both are mid-priced by Mediterranean standards. Cyprus tends higher in the resort towns and Crete cheaper away from the north-coast strip. Neither is expensive in the way Santorini or Mykonos are.
Choose Crete if
You want to drive mountain roads, walk a gorge, eat extremely well in a village, see the Minoan palaces, and combine the island with the rest of Greece.
Choose Cyprus if
You want the longest possible beach season, straightforward driving, a resort-shaped week with good archaeology attached, and you are not planning to island-hop afterwards.
