The crossing from Piraeus takes about an hour by fast boat, longer on a conventional ferry, sometimes via Aegina.
What a day looks like
Boats arrive at Skala or Megalochori, the island’s two harbours, which are a short walk or bus ride apart.
- Skala has the main sandy beach and most of the rooms and tavernas.
- Megalochori is quieter, with a harbour and pine-shaded coves nearby.
- Aponisos and Dragonera, on the far side, are the pine-backed swimming spots people rate most highly, reachable by the island bus, by bicycle or on foot.
Rent a bicycle or a scooter at the harbour and the whole island opens up in an afternoon. There is a bus, and taxis are few.
Why it suits a day trip
The island is small enough that no time is lost travelling on it, and green enough that there is shade, which is not true of most Saronic beaches. It works as a swim-and-lunch day with a walk between two harbours.
If you want ancient sights, Aegina next door has the Temple of Aphaia and Agistri has nothing of the kind. That is the choice between them.
Practical notes
- Check the last boat back before settling in for a long lunch. Timetables are seasonal and thinner out of season.
- Take cash; the island is small and card acceptance is uneven.
- Pine shade is the island’s luxury, so beaches with trees behind them fill first.
- Ferries can be cancelled in strong wind, as everywhere in the Saronic.
