Agistri: an hour from Piraeus, and covered in pine

A small pine-covered Saronic island an hour from Piraeus, with clear water off rocky coves, one road and enough space to walk or cycle all of it in a day.

It is about 13 square kilometres. You can cycle the road around it in a morning.

The settlements

  • Skala, where most boats arrive, with the island’s one proper sandy beach in front of it and most of the rooms.
  • Megalochori, also called Mylos, the larger village a short walk north, quieter and where more islanders live.
  • Limenaria, on the far side, a small farming settlement with a couple of tavernas and very little else.

A single road links them, with a bus that runs it in season.

The water

This is the reason to come. The coast is mostly rock and pine rather than sand, and the water off it is exceptionally clear because there is no river silt and little development.

  • Skala beach, sandy and shallow, the family one.
  • Chalikiada, on the south-east, reached down a steep path from the road: a pebble cove under a cliff, backed by pine, long a free-camping and naturist spot, with no facilities at all.
  • Dragonera, on the west, a series of small pine-shaded coves off the road, with flat rocks to swim from.
  • Aponisos, at the far south-west, a tiny islet joined by a causeway.

What it is like

Small and low-key. There is no nightlife to speak of, a handful of tavernas, and a strong Greek weekend crowd because it is so close to Athens. Out of season it is very quiet.

It also pairs easily with Aegina, since the boats connect and the crossing is short.

Getting there and how long

Fast boats and ferries from Piraeus, roughly one hour, plus a short local link from Aegina.

Two nights, or a long day if the point is a swim.

Is Agistri sandy?

Mostly not. Skala has the one proper sandy beach; the rest of the coast is rock and pebble backed by pine, with very clear water.

Do you need a car on Agistri?

No. The island is about 13 square kilometres, with one road, a seasonal bus, and bicycles widely hired.

It fills with Athenians at summer weekends because it is so close, and is very quiet out of season.
