The scheme is set by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, which publishes the current list. Dates and rules change year to year, so this page describes the pattern rather than reprinting a calendar that will be wrong by next season. The winter Sundays
The core of the scheme. Through the winter months, state-run archaeological sites, monuments and museums are free on set Sundays each month.
That pattern is deliberate. It falls outside the tourist season, when the sites are empty and the state would rather have Greeks in them than nobody, and it is genuinely the best time to see the big sites in comfort. An empty Delphi in February on a free Sunday is a different experience from the same site in August.
The precise Sundays have varied between years, which is why the exact rule belongs at the Ministry rather than on this page.
The fixed dates through the year
Several specific dates carry free admission regardless of season. The ones that recur are:
- 6 March, in memory of Melina Mercouri, the actor and former Minister of Culture.
- 25 March, Independence Day.
- International Museums Day in May, and European Heritage Days in the autumn.
- 28 October, the “Oxi” Day anniversary.
Two of those, 25 March and 28 October, are also national holidays, which means the country around the site is on holiday too. Public holidays and what closes covers what else stops on those days.
You still need a ticket
The detail that catches people out at the gate. Free admission does not mean walking straight in: you still collect a ticket at the entrance, and the site still counts you.
At the busiest sites on a free day that can mean a queue where you expected none. Arrive at opening rather than mid-morning, which is the same advice that applies to a paid day.
The Acropolis Museum is separate
Worth knowing before you build a day around it. The Acropolis Museum operates under its own legal framework rather than the Ministry’s general scheme, and it sets its own free days.
Several of them coincide with the national ones, but the two schemes are not the same and should not be assumed to match. Check the museum’s own site.

Whether to plan around it
Honestly: only if you are already travelling at the right time.
If you are in Greece in winter, a free Sunday is worth planning your week around, because the saving across several major sites is real and the sites are at their best empty. Greece in winter covers what else is open then.
